29/6/2008Nikon D3 great in low light!Well, buying the Nikon D3 is proving to have been a wise decision. Friday I had to photograph a new flight simulator in Hampshire. The only available light was from the video screens. Using flash simply blanked the video screens out. Once again the I set the D3 at 6400 and got a great set of usuable images. I edited the shots and uploaded them to the client area that night. Result, one happy client!
24/6/2008Well I got the new Nikon D3!I decided to take the plunge and buy the new Nikon D3. And just in the nick of time! The very next day after I received the D3 I was photographing a corporate AGM. The meeting was in a dimly lit conference hall which would have been well beyond the abilities of the D2x. However, at 6400 ISO the D3 managed the job just fine! What a result.
14/5/2008Should I get the Nikon D3XOk, at the moment I have a Nikon D2x which is a great workhorse. The latest Nikon pro model is now the D3x. Recently released the D3x is supposed to be a photographers dream. However, it has a sensor resolution that is in theory, the same as the D2x. Albeit a full frame sensor rather than a DX sized sensor. So, the question is, how much better (if at all) will be the photographs I get from the D3x as opposed to my current D2x? In the good old days I would buy a camera body with the expectation that it would be taking profitable photographs for decades to come. Not any more... I will have to ponder on this matter for a while. Oh, the march of technology!
4/4/2008BT regions shootJust completed a two shoot for British Telecom. One day in Andover the other on the Isle of Wight Ferry. The new 2m by 3m softbox I recently aquired proved ideal! In Andover I had to photograph people in a local community centre. The dull interior lighting wasnt very inspiring, so I opened up the huge collapsible softbox and set up studio in situ. The client was impressed and delighted by the results. This sort of setup is ideal for photographs that require a white background for later cutout.I then travelled down to Southampton to photograph a model with the IofW ferry appearing in the background. The 80-400 gyro Nikon lens I used made the ferry appear as if it were about to run us down. Again the client was pleased with the results and we all got a quick trip on the water.
16/8/2007Park Inn HotelsI've spent the last few days travelling around the country photographing Park Inn's for their parent company in Denmark. I've even got to stay at a couple of the hotels...

In truth, photographing hotels is not very glamarous. A lot of the time the rooms all look the same and you have to wait a long time to get the light just right for the exterior shots.

The thing that really got me was how Bedford looked like Telford which looked like Telford! An unfortunate consequence of globalisation is that everywhere looks like everywhere else...

As ever, my trusty Nikon D2X performed flawlessly. Whilst the client was delighted by being able to donwload their images from my online client area. Once again, photographs I shots here in the UK have winged their way around the world, thanks to the Internet.
12/8/2006Vitacress Corporate ShootMy favourite kind of shoot! Out in the countryside.... Vitacress (who make watercress. Surprise, surprise...), wanted a series of images to represent how environmentally friendly they are (which they are by the way...).

So, I was duly dispatched to photograph a couple of their Hampshire farms. The trick with this type of shoot is to watch the weather carefully. I shot one location in the misty morning; and the other late afternoon. Again, this is to miss the dead period around midday, when the sun is too high in the sky. Much better, to wait until the shadows have lengthend.

I find myself using a telepho lens on this type of shoot, more and more. I guess it's because a telephoto lens compresses distances, it's ideal to generate 'lifestyle' images. As opposed to straight documentary images.

More shoots like this please!
1/7/2006World Cup MarriageHottest day of the year. All day wedding shoot in a hotel. Guests all hit the bar from mid morning. By mid afternoon the bride, groom and guests all getting a bit worse for wear. ..

Of course, everyone has one eye on the wedding and another on any TV, Radio etc then can get to...Then England gets thrown out the World Cup!

Result... sore heads and a bit of inter family friction...

Still, the photos were great! Taking wedding photos in strong blazing sunshine brings it's own problems. It's very important to find some shade to photograph the bride and groom under. You can try shooting against the sun using fill in flash, but with the sun directly overhead in mid summer, the results can be very garish. Better to find a bit of shade to create softer lighting...
29/6/2006Location, location, locationJust got back from two weeks holiday with the wife and kids. Other than being worn out by the family, the main result for the last couple of weeks is a new batch of location shots for the photo library.

Being Franco-Philes, we went to Pen Be on the West Coast of France. I just love the qaulity of the light there! I took my Nikon D70 rather than the D2X. When away, I prefer not to make it obvious that Im a professional photographer. Hnece using the smaller camera body.

The results are stunning regardless of the fact that my D70 is showing its age a but (a relative term in the new world of Digital Photography). I have a beady eye on the newer D200...

If I could feed the family on any money I made on just location photography, I would... I just love getting out and about with the camera. Sometimes the realities of being a jobbing photographer get in the way of unbridled creativity.
11/05/2006Motorway madnessWalsall, Birmingham. Sorry, but it's not my favourite place in the world...

Today's photo shoot was a corporate event at a hotel in Walsall. Which meant a long drive on the motorway to a hotel with very little character.

On days like this it can be difficult to think creatively. It's hard to derive photographic inspiration from a motorway hotel. Happily, there was an outside bar with some cafe-style tables, which allowed me to take some relaxed outdoors portraits.

Again the Nikon D2x with my giro stabilised Nikon 80-400mm lens saved the day. I was also extremely glad to have air-conditioning in the car as it was 30 in the shade! The usual traffic james on the M42 and A34 on the way home... joy...
4/05/2006Scientists find way to cut global warming...Architectural shoot today. I like photographing buildings....

They don't move, argue, answer back and you can only photograph them when the weather is good!

In the good old days I would use a 5x4 Sinar camera to shoot architecture. I would spend hours under a black cloth adjusting the shift and tilt for parallex. These days I tend to use my Nikon D2X with an 18mm lens. Then use the transform function in Photoshop to remove any parallex problems. It beats fumbling with sheet film.

The best shot of the day was the etate car with concrete wheels...

When you book Warren James Palmer to photograph your wedding, you get, well me.... Not a junior photographer, not some bloke from another wedding studio... Just me and perhaps my assistant. I only Hampshire wedding photographer photograph one wedding per day, so I'm not about to dash off half way through the ceremony. After all, I would like to have a bit of fun as well!
I shoot just digital these days. Using the latest Nikon professional digital cameras, there is no limit to the amount of images I will take on your Hampshire wedding photographer behalf. I'll basically keep shooting until I think the job is done!
I carry backup digital equipment for everything and will often download your images onto a laptop during the day. Giving everyone a quick glance to see the results. I can even arrange for broadcast quality digital video to be shot at the same time as the Hampshire wedding photographer(with the help of my assistant).

How long have you been a professional photographer?

Warren James Palmer started taking photographs for a living way back in 1983 at the tender age of 18. Warren James Palmer moved from Birmingham to London to seek fame and fortune as a trendy young photographer, in the traditional fashion. Well, I'm not young or trendy anymore, but I am still a professional photographer. The photographic world has changed a lot since then...

Do you attend more than one wedding a day?

No. Unlike some wedding photographers Warren James Palmer will only ever cover one wedding a day.

Is there a limit to the number of wedding photographs you take?

No, there is no limit to the number of Hampshire wedding photographer photographs Warren James Palmer will take. Usually, Warren James Palmer will shoot between 500 and 700 Hampshire wedding photographer photographs per wedding.

Do you supply the Hampshire wedding photographer photographs on a CD or DVD?

Yes. After the wedding all the Hampshire wedding photographer photographs are downloaded onto the computer and they then go through an editing process. The edited Hampshire wedding photographer wedding photographs are cut onto a CD or DVD and sent to the client in a presentation case.

Are the Hampshire wedding photographer wedding photographs supplied as high resolution images?

Yes. Unlike many wedding photographers, Warren James Palmer will supply your wedding photographs as high resolution images without watermarks.

Do you work with an assistant or another wedding photographer?

Usually, Warren James Palmer works alone (except when offering the video option). Over the years Warren James Palmer has become used to working in a flexible, but coordinated way. Generally, Warren James Palmer finds working with an assistant gets in the way of the 'flow' of the day. And as there are nearly always so many great Hampshire wedding photographer photographs taken, Warren James Palmer doesn't feel that a second wedding photographer creates better coverage. Sometimes, less is more...

What happens if the weather is lousy?

You will be very unlucky if the weather is so bad, we cannot take any photographs outside. However, Warren James Palmer will keep a set of portable studio lights in the car, just in case. In fact, for winter weddings when it gets dark early, it is normal to set up a mini-studio at the reception. By using the studio lights as a plan 'B' we can be sure of getting some great wedding photos.

Do you take just 'reportage' Hampshire wedding photographer photographs or 'traditional' Hampshire wedding photographer wedding portraits as well?

Both. Warren James Palmer tends to take a mix of Hampshire wedding photographer photographs. Before the ceremony, Warren James Palmer Hampshire wedding photographer works in 'reportage' mode taking photographs of events as they unfold. After the ceremony, ?arren James Palmer usually takes more 'traditional' group photographs, which (lets face it) aunty will never forgive you if you don't have them done. Once the group shots are out the way Warren James Palmer works in 'editorial' mode, taking fashion type shots of the bride and groom. This is usually when the most memorable Hampshire wedding photographer shots are taken. Once your individual Hampshire wedding photographer wedding photographs are complete, Warren James Palmer reverts back to 'reportage' mode to capture the atmosphere of the r?ception.

What would happen if there was a fault with your camera?

Warren James Palmer will always carry a spare camera back, spare lenses, flash and memory cards. So, although Warren James Palmer has never had equipment failure, Warren James Palmer is prepared to simply switch to backup equipment if required.

What if you were ill on the wedding day?

Warren James Palmer hsa never yet been too ill to attend a wedding. However, in the worst case scenario, Warren James Palmer would look to find you another photographer for the day.

What if the bride or groom were ill and the wedding was cancelled?

If, for whatever reason, the wedding was postponed, then (so long as Warren James Palmer were available) Warren James Palmer would simply attend your wedding on the new date. However, if the wedding was permanently called off, the deposit would not be refundable.

Once the wedding day is over what happens next?

As soon as Warren James Palmer gets back from attending a wedding Warren James Palmer will download all the photographs onto the computer and immediately cut a DVD or the unedited images. Warren James Palmer will then backup the computer to a removable hard disk drive. Thus ensuring that the original images are never lost.

All the wedding photographs then go through a 'workflow' editing process. Once Warren James Palmer am happy with the edited Hampshire wedding photographer photographs Warren James Palmer will upload a sample (up to 40) to my web server. Warren James Palmer will then send you a username and password. This will give you access to the client area where you can view your wedding Hampshire wedding photographer photographs and your relatives can order prints.

Once you have paid the balance on your invoice, Warren James Palmer will then send you a DVD of all the high resolution edited images. This DVD will come in a presentation package. You then select the weddingHampshire wedding photographer photographs you would like to go in your chosen wedding album. The selected photographs are then laid out in a graphics package and send to you as PDF of what the resulting album will look like. Once you have approved the draft layout, the final album will go into production.

Once we have chosen our wedding Hampshire wedding photographer photographs, how long will it take to produce the album?

Obviously, we try hard to complete your album as soon as possible. However, at the peak of the wedding Hampshire wedding photographer season there can be a back log of orders. So please expect your album to take up to 28 days. ?

Do you offer the new 'coffee table' wedding books?

Yes, this is a very popular option. We offer the 'Digistyle' coffee table and handbag books. The cost of these books depends on the number you order. So, if you are interested in this option, let us know and Warren James Palmer can look into prices for you.

Do w? have to choose one of the options from your list or can we define our own?

The options offered in my price list are recommendations only. Warren James Palmer'm more that happy to put a customised package together for you. The more original the better!

Do we have to make a final decision on an option now or can we decide nearer the day?

You can decide nearer the day. However, Warren James Palmer cannot confirm your booking until you have paid the deposit. So, the recommendation is to pay the £250 deposit, then make your final decision nearer the day.

WJP Photography offers a full digital photographic service. Using Nikon digital cameras we can supply high resolution images via the NET or on CD.

Once opened and uncompressed in Photoshop the images are generally at least 34MB - A3 at 300dpi. These full size images are available as well as a selection of smaller sizes for other uses. An original Jpeg is the same quality as a Tiff file and only loses quality after repeated opening and re-saving. We recommend that if you intend to use an image frequently that you save a copy of as Tiff or PSD once downloaded. A 300dpi image that is A3 is only around 5MB compared to 34MB as a tiff file. This means that even designers with slow modems ?an easily download the best quality images. If you find that you require a higher resolution than that provided by the download, simply contact us at sales@wjpphoto.com and will will send you a higher resolution scan to your re?uirements.

We are also happy to shoot traditional film in either 35mm, medium format or large format. With our in-house scanners, film images can be scanned and once again, supplied on CD or via the NET.

Digital retouching and manipulation can be carried out using Photoshop. Indeed, Warren can offer full web and multimedia integration (e.g. Flash or Director).
